5 Takeaways from attending a New Roots intensive (by a New Roots Alum)

Hi y’all.. Feb 2023 Alum Ryli, here!

One of the coolest things I am realizing about the “New Roots Experience” is that no single intensive is the same. Why? Because we all are individual artists with different colors that makeup our personalities, so like notes, when you put us together we make awesome and unique chords!

I loved getting to hear from other Alums about their experiences at New Roots, so I am here to represent the “New Roots Class of Feb 2023” with my 5 takeaways from my experience.

1. Support and opportunities can be yours if you only dare ask.

Our group of artists were ready to cheer each other on in the studio and quite literally, hop onstage to help each other (shoutout to Francis for playing piano for me!) I typically am someone who would be too shy to ask for help, but getting out of your own head is so important because you may be surprised who, or how, someone steps up to the plate to help you out.

2. EVERYONE gets “lizard brain” as Judy Rodman likes to say. What you do NEXT is what counts!

My lizard brain liked to tell me that all artists are loud, outgoing, and do not get nervous on stage or in the studio. But lizard brains lie! It is ok to mess up (I did during my writers round!), and it is ok to be nervous. But what will make yourself proud is continuing on and starting over even when your hands shake.

3. There is a wealth of information available to you. It is ok to slow down and take it step-by-step.

We learned in Patryk & Sarah’s course that In 2023 we are expected to be our own writers, producers, artists of course, managers, social media content producers, etc. It is ok to slow down and tackle the skills as you can. Rome wasn’t built in a day!

4. It is ok to not follow what everyone does.

As Marty said, “If there’s not a river to cross, don’t build a bridge!” He was talking about a bridge in a song of course, (GOLD!), but I also took this another way. Be open to listening to your intuition, experiment, and allow your ear (and heart) to guide the way! You may surprise yourself.

5. There is magic in just being you. Know you DO belong!

As a New Roots Alum, it is incredible that Sheridan and Mark hand-picked us for this experience. Your hard-work and talent was noticed, so it is only right that you continue to be true to YOU! Allow that little girl who dreamed of singing her songs on stages around the world the chance to keep going no matter the obstacle. You are stepping into your power each day just by being yourself and no one else. Good things come to those who continue.

Sending you all magic song dust,

Ryli
